The Tonkin Gap project, delivered by BMD Constructions, Georgiou Group and WA Limestone, upgraded the Tonkin Highway between Collier Road and the Great Eastern Highway. The project significantly improved traffic flow and safety, including reducing peak-hour travel times by up to 11 minutes, and delivered state-of-the-art facilities for cyclists, pedestrians, and the wider community. Encompassing a 12-kilometre project site and requiring comprehensive traffic management, the scope of works included the realignment and widening of the Tonkin Highway; eight bridges and three footbridges; interchange upgrades; a principal shared path; crossing bridges and three underpasses.
The Judging Panel acknowledged the collaboration between the contractors, Main Roads Western Australia and the WA Public Transport Authority to deliver the project, particularly through design and construction issues, technical complexities, and potential risks. The Panel commended the contractors for their environmental, social, and economic performance, and sustainability.
