The Sydney Metro City – Martin Place Integrated Station Development combines a major metro transport interchange with two commercial towers, retail spaces, and enhanced public areas in the heart of Sydney. The project, delivered through a partnership between Sydney Metro and Macquarie Group, involved complex engineering and construction, including tunnelling beneath heritage structures, innovative piling techniques to preserve existing rail tunnels, and sustainable design principles to reduce carbon emissions.
The Judging Panel commended Macquarie Group and Sydney Metro for their collaboration in delivering a fully-integrated station development, working alongside Lendlease, Arup, Grimshaw Architects, Johnson Pilton Walker, and Tzannes to create a seamless transport and commercial precinct. The Panel acknowledged the project’s industry-leading safety initiatives, including advanced fall protection systems and an innovative pedestrian tunnel beneath 50 Martin Place, which minimised disruption to existing infrastructure. The Panel recognised the comprehensive community engagement process, which included consultation with First Nations communities and First Nations design consultancy Balarinji, to deliver a precinct that reflects both contemporary urban needs and cultural heritage.
