The Sydney Metro – Martin Place Integrated Station Development integrates the new Martin Place Metro Station with two commercial towers at 1 Elizabeth Street and 39 Martin Place, alongside a retail and dining precinct, an underground public walkway, and connections to the existing heavy rail station at Martin Place. Proposed through Macquarie Group’s unsolicited bid and delivered in partnership with Sydney Metro, the project includes approximately 4,000 square metres of retail space and 90,000 square metres of office accommodation, creating a significant transport and commercial precinct in the centre of Sydney’s CBD.
The Judging Panel recognised the strong partnership between Macquarie Group and Sydney Metro, which was central to the project’s successful delivery, from initial planning through to completion, which included fast-tracked delivery during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Panel commended the effective collaboration, which enabled the integration of heritage assets, improvements to public spaces, and ensured value for money for the State. As the first project of its kind in Australia, the project demonstrates the strength of public and private sector collaboration in delivering complex infrastructure.
