2025 National Infrastructure Awards Finalist

Sydney Metro City

The $21.6 billion Sydney Metro City project consists of new 15.5-kilometre twin tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham, with new stations delivered at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Gadigal and Waterloo, along with new underground platforms at Central Station. All Sydney Metro trains operate initially as six-car trains, with capacity to increase to eight carriages. The delivery of the trains, core systems, systems integration incorporation of the City section with the existing Sydney Metro North West Line (M1 Line), as well as ongoing operations and maintenance, was carried out by the OTS2 Public Private Partnership.

The Judging Panel acknowledged the collaboration between the public and private sector partners by leveraging lessons learnt from previous Sydney Metro projects to work towards success on the next stage. The Panel commended the coordination of multiple contracts – across installation, integration and operational readiness – through cross-contract collaboration, and the united effort to address challenges posed by the pandemic lockdown and supply chain and timeline constraints.
