The Moorebank Intermodal Precinct is a transformative infrastructure project aimed at improving Australia’s freight logistics. The project spans 240 hectares – the largest intermodal precinct in the country. The project aims to enhance freight efficiency and sustainability, with an emphasis on shifting long-distance haulage from road to rail. The Precinct is strategically connected to major road networks like the M5 and M7 motorways and has a dedicated rail link to Port Botany. It features over 850,000 square metres of warehousing for large-scale storage and distribution. Key facilities include an IMEX Rail Terminal offering frequent rail services to Port Botany, with a capacity of over one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year. The west side houses an Interstate Rail Terminal, capable of handling 500,000 TEU annually, connecting Sydney to major freight destinations around the country.
The Judging Panel shortlisted the project for its impact on freight logistics and the broader transport network, with the project expected to remove 3,000 heavy truck movements from Sydney’s roads every day, reducing congestion, lowering costs, and cutting carbon emissions. The Panel also recognised the project’s commitment to sustainability, with the Precinct featuring up to 60 megawatts of rooftop solar generation 100 hectares of local wildlife conservation zones.
