The Terminal Redevelopment and Aerobridges project at Darwin International Airport involved the redevelopment of the terminal’s first floor and the removal and replacement of aerobridges on Bays Two, Three and Four, and a link from Bay One to the terminal building. It also included the installation of a new Advanced Visual Docking Guidance System. The contractors were required to manage the challenges of construction within the operational demands of an airport with 24/7 operations, which required phased staging, scheduling construction during off-peak hours, and rerouting passengers during the relocation of the central screening area.
The Judging Panel commended the project for its commitment to operational excellence, particularly in delivering a large-scale redevelopment, while maintaining full airport functionality. The Panel also praised the project team for its phased staging approach, which minimised disruptions to airport operations while ensuring security protocols and passenger convenience were not impacted.
