AECOM was commissioned by Infrastructure South Australia to undertake a market study assessing the policy settings, technologies, and infrastructure requirements needed to establish a Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) industry in South Australia. As a critical component of the pathway to net zero, CCUS is particularly critical for hard-to-abate sectors. The study was designed to inform South Australia’s 20-year State Infrastructure Strategy, identifying infrastructure gaps, policy barriers, and assessing the economic and technological feasibility of supporting both domestic and international carbon dioxide supply chains.
The Judging Panel commended AECOM for its comprehensive approach to addressing the unique challenges and opportunities of the study, effectively integrating expertise across infrastructure advisory, engineering, cost and scheduling, economics, and environmental sciences. The Panel also highlighted the innovative use of a geographic information system-based tool, which mapped domestic carbon dioxide sources alongside pathways to preferred geological storage sites.
