Canberra Hospital Expansion

Canberra Hospital Expansion

The Canberra Hospital Expansion commenced operations in August 2024 and delivered a sustainable, patient-first hospital that meets growing healthcare demands. The Hospital’s Critical Services Building is a 44,000-square metre, nine-storey building designed for a new Emergency Department, with 128 treatment spaces, a 48-bed Intensive Care Unit, 22 operating theatres, Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories, Medical Imaging and 160 inpatient beds. Infrastructure Canberra worked in partnership with Canberra Health Services and Multiplex to deliver the project.

The Judging Panel shortlisted the project for being delivered on time and on budget, despite facing significant challenges, including through the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain disruptions, and for setting new standards in innovation and patient-centred care. The Panel recognised the project’s innovative approach to sustainability, delivering an all-electric hospital and avoiding 1,886 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. This includes the integration of a sophisticated Building Management Control System, ensuring continuous monitoring and optimisation of energy usage, supporting long-term sustainability goals.
