The Cooroy to Curra Section D2 (Gympie Bypass) forms part of the Bruce Highway Upgrade, one of the largest road infrastructure programs in Queensland. The project included the construction of 18 kilometres of new highway, realignments to local roads, 19 bridges, and a new interchange at Curra. The project was delivered on time and on budget by CPB Contractors, despite experiencing a number of challenges, including the impacts of one-in-100 year flooding during earthworks.
The Judging Panel commended the project for its strategic execution, adherence to industry best practices, and significant community impact. With over 80 per cent local workforce participation, a strong commitment to Indigenous employment, and the successful removal of 82,000 truck movements through an innovative water pipeline system, the project demonstrated exceptional sustainability and social benefits. The Panel noted that the upgrade has not only improved road safety and travel reliability, but set a benchmark for large-scale infrastructure delivery in challenging environments.
